The hardest part of planning a Vietnam trip is often working out how to choose a Halong Bay cruise. The search results give you almost nothing to compare. Hunting for the best Halong Bay cruise 2026 turns up fares from $135 to $290 per adult across the Beka Travel fleet. The vessels behind those prices are marketed with the same photographs of the same limestone karst. This guide gives you a five-criterion framework, a fleet comparison with real numbers, and the true cost once hidden fees are added back in.
A Halong Bay overnight cruise is a packaged sailing through the limestone karst of northeastern Vietnam. These vessels act as floating hotels. One bundled fare covers your cabin, meals, guided excursions and transport through the bay. Across the Beka Travel fleet that fare runs from $135 to $290 per adult.
To see live availability and filter by date, browse all Halong Bay cruises on the booking hub.
When you book a standard overnight cruise, the base price covers your private cabin and all meals on board. That means lunch and dinner on day one, plus breakfast and a heavy brunch on day two. The fare also includes guided activities, an English-speaking guide, and the government sightseeing tickets required to enter the bay.
On the three Orchid boats that fee sits inside the fare, so nothing is collected at the gate. Some operators strip the bay ticket out of the base price, which makes the number look sharper.
Assuming everything is covered is a common mistake. Standard fares rarely include beverages, so even bottled water at dinner is charged to your cabin.
Crew gratuities and spa treatments are billed separately. Shuttle transfers between Hanoi and the departure port are almost always an extra charge. So is the single supplement if you occupy a double cabin alone, and so is the holiday surcharge over Tet.
The road transfer causes the most trouble. All three Orchid fares quote the Hanoi to Tuan Chau van separately, yet the printed itinerary opens with a hotel pickup at 08:00. That reads as though the van is covered. Reading the inclusion list is the dullest part of how to choose a Halong Bay cruise, and the most useful.
Beka's day tours work the other way. The Ha Long Bay to Lan Ha Bay Cat Ba Island Day Tour at $50 includes the road legs and all entrance fees.

Here is what you actually do on a standard overnight Lan Ha Bay itinerary. The times come from published Orchid schedules.
Day 1: boarding and afternoon excursions
Day 2: morning activities and departure

Many operators market their trips as Halong Bay, but the ship sails one of three adjacent bays. Geography sets the scenery, the density of other boats, and the caves you walk through. All three Orchid boats leave Tuan Chau, then spend the overnight portion in Lan Ha Bay.
| Criteria | Halong Bay | Lan Ha Bay | Bai Tu Long Bay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heritage status | UNESCO 1994, expanded 2023 | Inside the 2023 extension | Outside the core zone |
| Crowding level | Highest | Noticeably lower | Lowest |
| Landscape | Classic karst, big caves | Karst plus white sand beaches | Undeveloped karst |
| Key activities | Caves, Ti Top Island | Kayak lagoons, swimming, fishing villages | Distant islands, fewer boats |
| Departure port | Tuan Chau, Hon Gai | Tuan Chau, Ben Beo, Got | Hon Gai |
| Sold by Beka Travel | Yes | Yes, the flagship route | No |
Note the UNESCO 2023 expansion. Decision 45 COM 8B.3, taken on 16 September 2023, merged the Cat Ba Archipelago into the site. It is now inscribed as Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago, and few operator pages have caught up.
Lan Ha Bay therefore sits within the exact same World Heritage site but receives far fewer visitors. In 2025 the core Halong area took about 3.4 million sightseeing visits, 2.2 million of them international. The source is the Ha Long Bay – Yen Tu World Heritage Management Board.
Read the itinerary rather than the product name. All three Orchid boats kayak at Ao Ech, anchor overnight at Tra Bau, and visit Trung Trang Cave. Ao Ech and Tra Bau sit in Lan Ha Bay, and Trung Trang sits on Cat Ba Island.
This is not a trick. The boats are named after the port they sail from, and Lan Ha joined the same listing in 2023. It still changes what to expect: no Sung Sot Cave, no Ti Top Island, and far less traffic at the anchorage.
Two questions settle it. Ask which anchorage the boat uses overnight, and which cave it visits. Those answers tell you the bay, whatever the name says.
For route differences, check our Halong Bay vs Lan Ha Bay comparison. Beka Travel sells no Bai Tu Long itinerary. If that water is the draw, the Bai Tu Long Bay guide explains the route honestly.
Weighting your decision across route, ship size, cabin quality, itinerary, and safety policy filters out unsuitable options faster than reading another twenty reviews. These five criteria run in the same order we work through internally. It is the order a guest hears when they ask how to choose a Halong Bay cruise for a first visit.
Your choice of bay dictates the entire atmosphere of your trip. Halong Bay offers monumental caves but heavy boat traffic, particularly at Sung Sot and Ti Top between 10am and 2pm. Lan Ha Bay offers cleaner swimming and a quieter environment. The cost is skipping the sights that appear on every postcard.
Ship size directly impacts your onboard experience and your waiting times. A 10-cabin boat moves everyone onto the tender in about five minutes. A 50-cabin ship might need half an hour to disembark a full manifest.
A balcony suite changes the trip, because you can watch the karst scenery without going up to a shared deck. Consider the square footage carefully. A standard cabin sits under half the floor area of a top suite, which usually adds a soaking tub.
Most overnight schedules look identical on paper. Look for ships offering something off the standard route: deep-water kayaking, a secluded beach stop, or cycling on Cat Ba Island. These are the parts guests describe afterwards.
Tropical weather changes quickly in northern Vietnam. Read the cancellation policy before you pay a deposit, and check what happens if the port authority grounds the fleet. A clear policy states whether you get a refund, a date change or a land alternative.
The Orchid boats publish four thresholds. Cancelling beyond 30 days is free. From 30 to 11 days costs 15%, from 10 to 7 days costs 30%, and inside 7 days you pay in full.
| Criterion | Weight | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Bay and route | 25% | Dictates crowding and landscape, and it is the hardest thing to fix later |
| Ship size | 20% | Determines your sense of privacy and your waiting times |
| Cabin category | 20% | Represents your largest single line inside the fare |
| Itinerary | 15% | Determines your daily activities and physical exertion |
| Safety and policies | 15% | Protects you from weather cancellations and financial risk |
| Food and dining | 5% | Standards barely move between price bands, so it rarely decides anything |
This is Beka's own framework, not an industry ranking and not a scoring system anyone else has agreed to. It reflects what our guests ask about, in the order they ask. Other operators put cabin and service at the top and safety near the bottom, so the table is there for you to argue with.
Expect $135 to $290 per adult for a standard 2-day-1-night cruise, but the advertised rate is never the final bill. Two adults pay $270 to $580 in fares alone, plus transfer, drinks and tips. That is the honest half of how to choose a Halong Bay cruise, because your real Halong Bay cruise price depends on those additions.
| Expense | Lan Ha day tour, 2 adults | Orchid Classic 2D1N, 2 adults | Orchid Premium 2D1N, 2 adults |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cruise fare total | $100 ($50 x 2) | $340 ($170 x 2) | $580 ($290 x 2) |
| Roundtrip Hanoi transfer | Included, pickup 07:15 to 08:00 | Quoted separately | Quoted separately |
| Sightseeing tickets | Included | Included | Included |
| Drinks at the bar | Your budget | Your budget | Your budget |
| Crew and guide tips | Your budget | Your budget | Your budget |
| Single supplement | Does not apply | Applies, amount not published | Applies, amount not published |
| Paid to Beka Travel up front | $100 | $340 | $580 |
No service charge is added to these fares, so tips are yours to set. Budget a Halong Bay overnight cruise line by line rather than by headline price. A fare excluding the Hanoi legs is not comparable to one that includes them, so ask for the van price in writing.
Government fees below are charged per person when a boat quotes the bay ticket separately. Day routes VHL1, VHL2 and VHL5 are 250,000 VND. VHL3 and VHL4 are 200,000 VND, VHL6 is 150,000 VND per day, VHL7 is 600,000 VND, and VHL8 is 70,000 VND.
Overnight fees include sightseeing access. Route 2 costs 550,000 VND for one night or 750,000 VND for two. Routes 3 and 4 cost 500,000 VND and 650,000 VND.
Exemptions apply for families. Children under 1.2 metres or under 7 years old are fully exempt. Children aged 7 to under 16 receive a 20% discount, assessed by age rather than height.
One rule catches international visitors out. The 50% discount for travellers aged 60 and over applies to Vietnamese citizens only, so a foreign passport pays full price at any age.

Every honest Halong Bay cruise comparison starts with price, so the table below lists each overnight boat in that order. It is the Halong Bay cruise comparison most operator sites will not publish. Most ships we resell sail Lan Ha Bay, which is why we recommend them.

Prices are the from-rates shown on the Beka Travel product pages on 31 July 2026, for two days and one night unless stated. Child rates: $128 on Orchid Classic, $116 on Orchid Trendy, $217 on Orchid Premium.
The star column is missing on purpose. Star labels on these listings are written by the operators themselves, and Beka has not traced most to an issuing authority. We have seen five-star boats priced below four-star boats on the same route. A Halong Bay cruise price reflects ship age, cabin size or a promotion rather than a star category.
Empty cells are deliberate too. They mark data Beka has not verified, and a made-up cabin count would be worse than a blank. Anyone hunting the best Halong Bay cruise 2026 meets the same names everywhere. Price is the one column nobody can fudge, which makes it the fastest route through how to choose a Halong Bay cruise.
Ships like La Pandora offer strong value for backpackers and budget-conscious travellers. At this price you secure a private cabin and all your meals, though the food leans towards local Vietnamese buffets. The hardware may be older, but the view matches the one from a suite twice the price.
This tier is where most international travellers find their match, and eight of the twelve boats sit in it. Ships like Indochine Cruise Lan Ha Bay and Orchid Classic provide newer facilities, private balconies and upgraded bathrooms. Service is professional, and the dining rooms mix international and local cuisine.
A ship like Orchid Premium sells space, exclusivity and attention. These vessels feature large suites with panoramic glass and a staff-to-guest ratio high enough that service never feels rationed. With five suites on board, the experience is closer to a private charter than a group tour.
You might want a romantic escape, a family holiday or a quiet retreat, and those three trips point to three very different ships. If price alone has not settled the question of how to choose a Halong Bay cruise, start from your travel style. Match the guest count and cabin type to who is travelling.
Couples usually prioritise privacy, good food and unobtrusive service. Boutique vessels with fewer than 15 cabins offer the most romantic atmosphere and keep you clear of group tours.
Fifteen guests on the Orchid Premium Cruise means one dinner service and a quiet anchorage. If $290 is beyond budget, the Orchid Classic Cruise at $170 sails the identical route.

Travelling with children requires space and things to do. Ships offering connecting family suites and onboard recreation keep children busy while parents get an hour on the sundeck.
The Orchid Trendy Cruise carries up to 50 guests across 20 balcony cabins, and its sundeck jacuzzi holds attention longer than any view. Orchid Classic offers a family suite, so the group need not split across two cabins. Child fares run $128 on Orchid Classic, $116 on Orchid Trendy and $217 on Orchid Premium. Our guide to Halong Bay with kids covers the rest.
Solo travellers should look for reasonable single-supplement rates and communal dining. Mid-sized vessels strike the best balance, sociable without the crowding of a large ship.
The supplement is the whole question. Occupying a two-person cabin alone triggers it on every boat, and the amount is not published. If it kills the budget, a day tour solves it. The Ha Long Bay Day Tour: Sung Sot Cave, Luon Cave & Titop Island at $34 has no cabin and no supplement.
If avoiding tourist traffic is your main goal, look past the traditional routes entirely. We point these guests to boats sailing the southern water rather than the central corridor. Group size and route timing keep those trips genuinely uncrowded.
Yes, sailing here is tightly regulated. As of 2026, all tourist vessels must meet technical, fire safety and environmental standards. Every overnight cruise must carry GPS, AIS and VHF radios, plus storm warning and positioning equipment. The rules tightened again this year, and the March 2026 review covered 332 vessels.
AIS is the detail worth knowing. It broadcasts each boat's identity and position continuously, so the harbour authority can call vessels in when a squall builds.
Enforcement is active rather than nominal. That review penalised 9 ships for non-compliance, following a government directive of 2 March 2026. Safety is the part of how to choose a Halong Bay cruise that guests research last and worry about most.
A single-use plastic ban has applied across the bay since September 2019. In May 2025 a vessel was suspended for seven days for letting guests bring plastic bottles aboard, so pack a reusable one.
Sailings stop when the harbour authority closes the bay, which happens several times a summer. For more on ecological preservation, read about responsible travel in Halong Bay.
The prime months to sail are October to November and March to May, when skies are clear and the water stays calm. Sea temperatures hold around 25 to 28°C through the autumn window. Avoid July and August, the peak season for tropical depressions and port closures. August alone brings up to 445mm of rain.
Most travellers book 2 to 8 weeks ahead. Timing matters as much as the ship itself when you decide how to choose a Halong Bay cruise.
| Month | Risk level | Reason for disruptions |
|---|---|---|
| January to February | Low | Heavy fog causing slight delays |
| March to May | Very low | Stable, settled conditions |
| June and September | Moderate | Shoulder storms at either end of the season |
| July to August | High | Peak typhoon season, most cancelled sailings |
| October to December | Very low | Clear, cool and predictable weather |
Storms cross the region from late May to early November. Aim for the longer end of that booking window in October and November, when small boats and balcony cabins go first. If you travel in the high-risk months, build a spare day into your itinerary in case the bay closes. For more detail, see our guide to the best time to visit Halong Bay.

Halong Bay lies 150 to 160 kilometres east of Hanoi, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by road. Shuttle transfers and private cars are now the only options. The Hanoi seaplane service stopped permanently on 1 April 2026, and helicopter sightseeing ended in 2023. Any older guide listing air transfers is out of date.
Almost every cruise transfer leaves the Old Quarter between 07:15 and 08:30, and boarding is normally around midday.
Work out the transfer first if your schedule is tight, because the van window sets your first day. Learn more about getting from Hanoi to Halong Bay, and the Halong Bay packing list covers the day bag.
A 2-day-1-night itinerary covers the major highlights, but you only spend roughly 24 hours on the water. The schedule gives you an afternoon of kayaking, a night at anchor and a morning excursion. A 3-day trip adds a quieter second anchorage. If time is tight, a day tour from $34 still delivers the karst scenery.
Operators say the difference lies in cabin size, the presence of a balcony suite, and dining quality. Ships labelled 5-star offer larger bathrooms and a higher staff-to-guest ratio. The catch is that most star claims are written by the operator, and Beka has not traced an issuing authority for them. Check guest count, cabin category and price band instead.
Overnight fares usually bundle the mandatory sightseeing tickets into the price, but verify this on the inclusions list. Some budget operators leave it out to make their base price look artificially low. The three Orchid boats include the fee, so nothing is collected at the gate. The route 2 overnight fee is 550,000 VND per person.
If the port authority grounds the fleet, a reputable operator will invoke their cancellation policy. That usually means a full refund, a date change, or a land alternative until the weather clears. Cancelling voluntarily is different, and the published schedule applies. On the Orchid boats that is free beyond 30 days, then 15%, then 30%, then the full fare inside a week.
Yes, and many itineraries already do it without saying so. The Orchid boats leave Tuan Chau in Halong, then spend the overnight portion at Tra Bau in Lan Ha. Both bays have sat inside one World Heritage property since 2023. You can also pair a Halong Bay overnight cruise with a day trip. Our Halong Bay to Lan Ha Bay day tour connects both sides from $50.
The core zone is heavily trafficked by day boats and overnight vessels, and 3.4 million sightseeing visits in 2025 shows why. Sung Sot Cave and Ti Top Island absorb most of that between 10am and 2pm. If crowding is a concern, a Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long itinerary offers the same limestone landscape with fewer boats. Choosing the anchorage solves most of it.
No, the seaplane service connecting Hanoi to Halong Bay was permanently discontinued on 1 April 2026, and scenic helicopter flights ended in 2023. All travel to the departure ports is now by overland transfer on the expressway. Several large travel sites still list air options with prices, because nobody has updated those pages, so ignore any itinerary offering one.
To secure the best Halong Bay cruise 2026 options, especially a balcony suite on a small ship, book 2 to 8 weeks ahead. During the peak spring and autumn months, spaces fill up rapidly. Two to three weeks is usually enough from December to February. Public holidays carry a surcharge and fill earliest.
That, in short, is how to choose a Halong Bay cruise. Balance the route, the size of the vessel, your cabin needs, the daily activities, and the operator's safety policy. Work through those five in order and the shortlist narrows quickly. The cost table lets you check a Halong Bay cruise price against what it genuinely includes.
