A cruise in Halong Bay is synonymous with relaxation, but for the energetic traveler, the bay is a sprawling adventure playground. Most lists of things to do in Halong Bay run to thirty items and leave you no wiser. The bay is not a city with attractions on a map, it is a set of boat routes. Your ticket decides which stops you reach. From paddling through quiet lagoons to hiking the rugged paths of Cat Ba Island, this guide sorts them into five groups. Prices come from the official fee schedule.

Your sightseeing route decides which stops you get

Every boat working the bay is licensed for a numbered sightseeing route, and the route fixes the stops. Buy route VHL2 and you get Soi Sim, Ti Top, Sung Sot and Me Cung. Buy VHL3 and you get Cua Van, Tien Ong and Ba Ham Lake instead. No amount of asking will move the boat between them.

This is why two tours at the same price deliver different days. Read the route number before the photographs. It is the first filter to apply to any list of things to do in Halong Bay.

Two rules apply everywhere. Single-use plastic has been banned across the bay since September 2019, so bring a refillable bottle. Since 2026 every passenger vessel must carry GPS, AIS and a VHF radio, and 332 boats were inspected in March 2026.

What are the best Halong Bay activities on the water?

Paddling, swimming and island climbing are the three water activities open to ordinary visitors. All three are tied to licensed spots rather than available anywhere. Halong Bay kayaking runs at eight approved sites, swimming is legal at one beach, and the climbing is a staircase.

Kayaking through secret lagoons

Kayaking is widely considered the quintessential Halong Bay activity. While cruise ships must stick to deep-water navigation channels, a kayak grants you access to the in-between spaces. You can paddle into low-hanging caves that open into emerald, enclosed lagoons, often called tunnel caves. Inside them the silence is profound and the water is glass-like. It is the best way to get up close with the limestone karst formations and the ecosystem of the bay.

What the rules actually allow: paddling is permitted at eight sites under Decision 6643/QD-UBND (2017), each with a capacity limit. Four lie in the central bay: Ba Hang, Luon Cave, Dong Tien Lake with Trinh Nu Cave, and Vung Tung Sau. The other four are Cua Van, Vung Vieng, Hang Co and the Cong Do to Tra San stretch. Sessions run 45 to 60 minutes inside a marked area.

Tips for success: always wear your life jacket, even if you are a strong swimmer, because the water can be deceptive. Bring a waterproof dry bag for your camera or phone. If you are a beginner, look for cruises that offer sit-on-top kayaks. They are more stable and easier to maneuver than traditional sit-inside kayaks. Go out in the early morning for the best light, as the mist over the water creates fine photography conditions.

Ti Top island, the climb and the bay only legal swim

Ti Top is the most photographed stop in the bay, and the reason is the view from the top. Count on roughly 400 steps, or 15 to 20 minutes at a steady pace.

The beach matters more than most guides admit. Halong Bay has around 200 beaches, but Ti Top is the only one licensed for visitors to swim from. Everywhere else in the core bay, swimming from shore is barred.

Go early or go late, because boats cluster between 10am and 2pm. Ti Top sits on route VHL2, so the climb and the swim share one 250,000d ticket.

Swimming and snorkeling

It sounds simple, but swimming in the middle of a UNESCO World Heritage site is a surreal experience. Many cruises stop at beaches where you can wade into the water right from the sand. Others offer swimming stops directly off the deck of the boat. The water is generally warm from May to October, making it the best window for a dip.

Water temperature decides whether this is a swim or a paddle. January drops to about 21°C.

Tips for success: if you want to snorkel, ask the cruise operator beforehand if they provide gear. The marine life in Halong Bay is recovering, and you can see schools of fish and rock formations beneath the surface. It is not as colorful as a tropical coral reef. Always check for jellyfish before diving in. If you have sensitive skin, consider wearing a rash guard, which also provides extra sun protection.

Swimming off the back of a boat is normal in Lan Ha Bay and unusual in the core bay. All three Orchid boats anchor overnight at Tra Bau. Orchid Trendy Cruise costs $155 for adults, with 20 balcony cabins and a 50-guest ceiling. Orchid Premium Cruise costs $290 and takes 15 guests across 5 suites.

Rock climbing and deep water soloing

Rock climbing at Butterfly Valley has become a favorite for hardcore adventurers. It has both sport climbing and deep-water soloing routes on the limestone cliffs.

Caves, and why they are not interchangeable

Caves are the most booked of all things to do in Halong Bay. Over 70 have been found, about 59 are fit for use, and 19 currently receive visitors. They differ in size, lighting and crowd level, and your route number decides which you reach.

Cave trekking and summit hikes

The limestone islands of Halong Bay are riddled with vast, ancient cavern systems. Many of them have been illuminated and converted into accessible trekking paths. Places like Sung Sot Cave or Dau Go Cave are not just for sightseeing, they are legitimate treks. You will find yourself climbing hundreds of steps and navigating through massive vaulted ceilings of stalactites. You emerge at viewpoints that offer a 360-degree look at the bay.

Tips for success: comfortable footwear is mandatory, so leave the flip-flops on the boat. Bring hiking sandals or sneakers with a good grip. These caves can be humid and warm, so dress in breathable fabrics. Bring a bottle of water, as the climb can be physically demanding. If you are visiting a less popular cave, bring a flashlight, though most main caves are well lit.

Sung Sot, the one that lives up to the photographs

Sung Sot is the largest cave open to visitors and the one most day tours are built around. Two enormous chambers, about 100 steps up from the landing, and half an hour inside. Luon Cave, which you go through rather than into

Luon is a low tidal arch you pass under by kayak or bamboo boat into an enclosed lagoon. There is no walking and no lighting. Tide height decides whether the arch is passable, so it is the stop most likely to be swapped. Golden-headed langurs live on the cliffs above, and Luon Cave has the tide detail.

Thien Cung and Dau Go, the pair on the other route

These two sit side by side on Bo Hon Island and share one hillside path, on route VHL1 at 250,000d. Thien Cung is heavily floodlit in colour and gets busy. Dau Go next door is larger, dimmer and quieter.

Trung Trang Cave on Cat Ba

Trung Trang is a dry through-cave in Cat Ba National Park, about 300 metres long. You walk it end to end with a torch rather than floodlights, and bats live in it. It is in the $50 Lan Ha day tour. The Halong Bay caves guide compares every cave side by side.

Fishing villages and the culture stops

Village stops are the quietest of the mainstream things to do in Halong Bay. Four floating villages once housed several thousand people, and residents were resettled ashore from 2014. Two remain open: Cua Van on route VHL3 and Vung Vieng on route VHL4.

Cua Van and its floating cultural centre

Cua Van sits about 20 kilometres southeast of Tuan Chau and was the largest village on the bay. A floating cultural centre still stands there, holding fishing gear, photographs and recordings of courtship songs from the water.

Visits run about an hour, by rowboat with a local rower rather than by kayak. These are working villages with moored rafts and nets, and a badly steered boat causes damage. Day boats from Tuan Chau rarely reach VHL3.

Vung Vieng, the pearl farm and the eastern bay

Vung Vieng sits on route VHL4 in the Bai Tu Long direction, with a pearl farm and a rowboat circuit. Pearl farming is a working industry here, not a set piece. The visit takes twenty minutes and ends in a shop, so buy only what you would have bought at home.

What can you do on board an overnight cruise?

Some of the best things to do in Halong Bay happen while the boat is at anchor. Most overnight vessels run three or four scheduled activities. On a two-day-one-night trip these fill more hours than the sightseeing does, and almost none cost extra.

Squid fishing at night

For a unique evening activity that combines skill and fun, try your hand at night squid fishing. Once the boat anchors for the night, the crew turns on high-powered lights to attract squid rising to the surface in the dark. You are provided with simple bamboo rods and reels to try your luck. It is a favorite pastime and a great way to bond with fellow travelers on board.

Tips for success: patience is key, because squid are notoriously elusive. Do not worry about catching anything. The experience is about the atmosphere, sitting on deck under the stars, away from city lights, listening to the water lap against the hull. Many cruises will offer to cook whatever the group catches as a late-night snack, turning the activity into a shared culinary moment.

Cooking classes on the sundeck

Most overnight boats run a demonstration class in the late afternoon, usually spring rolls. It lasts 30 to 45 minutes and you eat what you make. If you already cook Vietnamese food, use the hour on the sundeck. Sunrise tai chi at 6:30am is on almost every itinerary, though the light at that hour is the better reason to be up.

Day trip or overnight, and how the activity list changes

A day tour gives you two caves, one kayak session and one island. An overnight adds the whole on-board list, a sunset, a swim, and routes a day boat cannot reach.

Halong Bay attractions on Cat Ba Island and on shore

Not every entry on a list of things to do in Halong Bay happens on the water. Cat Ba has the only cycling worth the name, and Bai Chay is where the buses stop. Land attractions are ticketed separately, outside the route system.

Cycling in Cat Ba National Park

If your cruise includes a stop at Cat Ba Island, do not stay on the beach. The island is home to a lush, dense national park with fantastic cycling trails. Riding a bike through the park shows the contrast between the marine beauty of the bay and the tropical forest of the island. You will pass local villages and rural farms along the way.

If you are one of the very few lucky ones, you might catch a distant glimpse of the critically endangered Cat Ba langur. Sightings are genuinely rare. With fewer than 80 individuals left in the wild, most visitors will not spot one, and that is completely normal. The forest itself is worth the ride regardless.

Tips for success: check the bike before you set off, and make sure the brakes and gears are functioning. The terrain can be quite hilly, so if you are not a fit cyclist, ask your guide about an e-bike. Always carry sunscreen and bug spray, as the forest is active with mosquitoes. Keep to the marked trails to protect the fragile ecosystem.

Queen Cable Car, the museum and the Bai Chay waterfront

The Queen Cable Car crosses Cua Luc bay in two-storey cabins and lands at a hilltop park with a 215-metre wheel. Tickets are 380,000d for adults and 280,000d for children as of July 2026. Go at dusk for the best view of the bay without a boat.

What can you no longer do in Halong Bay?

Two aerial options still appear on other lists of things to do in Halong Bay, and neither survives. Seaplane flights are no longer available as of April 2026, and helicopter tours ended in 2023 after an accident. There is now no way to see the bay from the air.

• Seaplane sightseeing stopped permanently on 1 April 2026. Hai Au Aviation announced it on 6 March, after a decade of 25-minute scenic flights.
• Helicopter tours ended in 2023 and have not resumed.

The Queen Cable Car and the Ti Top staircase are the highest viewpoints still open. Sites quoting seaplane fares of $400 are working from pre-2026 information.

How much do things to do in Halong Bay cost?

Almost every activity on the water is bundled into one sightseeing ticket, priced by route. Nothing is collected at the cave door or the top of the Ti Top steps. Day routes run from 70,000d to 600,000d per person, and overnight rates are charged separately.

Overnight boats pay a combined rate that already includes sightseeing. Route 2 is 550,000d for one night and 750,000d for two. Routes 3 and 4 are 500,000d and 650,000d.

Exemptions and reductions

• Free for children under 1.2m or under 7 years old
• 20% reduction for children aged 7 to under 16, assessed by age rather than height
• 50% reduction for visitors aged 60 and over, Vietnamese citizens only

Which activities are already paid for, and which are not

Most Halong Bay activities on the water sit inside the ticket you buy at the pier. The exceptions are kayak rental, village rowboats and everything on shore.

Packing for an active day on the water

The bay is humid, the boats are wet underfoot, and the caves are warmer inside than out. Six items cover almost every problem.

• Waterproof sandals or sport shoes with grip
• Quick-dry clothing, essential for the humidity
• High-SPF, waterproof sunscreen
• A sturdy, waterproof dry bag for your gadgets
• A reusable water bottle to minimize plastic waste in the bay
• Insect repellent for island hikes

The bottle is not optional. Boats have been suspended for letting guests bring plastic ones aboard.

Building a day or two out of this list

Deciding what to do in Halong Bay comes down to how many nights you have. One day covers the water and the caves. Two days adds the villages, the on-board activities and an unhurried swim. Three days is the only version that reaches the eastern bay without rushing.

A workable one-day plan: leave Hanoi around 8am, kayak at Luon, walk Sung Sot, climb Ti Top, and get back by 9pm. That is the shape of the $34 day tour. A two-day plan adds a second kayak session, a cooking class, squid fishing and a sunrise.

What is the single best thing to do in Halong Bay if you only have one day?

Kayak at Luon Cave. A single day buys you one genuinely memorable hour. Paddling under a tidal arch into a walled lagoon is the version of the bay you have not seen in photographs. Sung Sot is bigger and Ti Top higher, but both come with a queue. Book a tour on route VHL2, which covers all three.

Can you swim anywhere in Halong Bay?

Not in the core bay. Of roughly 200 beaches, only Ti Top is licensed for visitors to swim from. Swimming off the boat is barred at most central anchorages. Lan Ha Bay is different, with dozens of coves where cruises anchor and guests swim off the platform. Water sits between 27 and 30°C from May to October.

Is kayaking included in the price of a Halong Bay cruise?

Usually, but confirm it in writing. Halong Bay kayaking is not part of the sightseeing ticket, so operators either build the rental into the fare or charge on the day. Are seaplane tours over Halong Bay still operating?

No. Hai Au Aviation ended its seaplane sightseeing service permanently on 1 April 2026, announced on 6 March, after operating since September 2014. Helicopter tours stopped in 2023 and did not restart. No aerial sightseeing over the bay survives. Any site still quoting a seaplane fare is running on old information.

What to do in Halong Bay when the weather turns wet?

Caves work in any weather. Quang Ninh Museum is the strongest of the shore-side Halong Bay attractions in the rain. On board, cooking classes and the sundeck bar carry on regardless. Rain mainly affects kayaking and swimming. Wind, not rain, is what triggers cancellations, so a wet but calm day usually sails as planned.

Which Halong Bay activities work with young children?

Bamboo rowboat rides, the Ti Top beach, squid fishing and the cooking class all work well. The Ti Top staircase and the Sung Sot steps are harder with under-fives, though both can be skipped while the boat waits. Children under 1.2m or under 7 enter free on sightseeing tickets, and those aged 7 to under 16 pay 20% less.
