The cave sits in Trung Trang Valley, about 15km northwest of Cat Ba Town center, right alongside the island's main asphalt road, inside the protected area of Cat Ba National Park (a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve). You can reach the entry gate by rented motorbike, private car, or organized eco-tour.

Locals originally called it Bat Cave, after the thousands of wild bats that once sheltered inside. Local legend also credits a Revered Lady who is said to have used the cavern as a base to recruit and train troops, with some rock formations said to resemble her war elephants and palanquins.
During the resistance war from 1964 to 1968, the cave served as the base for the National Military Telecommunications Command, sheltering soldiers and communication equipment thanks to its natural bomb-proof structure. That history links it directly to the nearby Hang Quan Y military hospital cave, forming a small wartime heritage trail through the park.
Past a vine-covered entrance, the cave opens into a cool, roughly 300-meter passage through the mountain, with a stable temperature noticeably cooler than outside. The stalactites and stalagmites here are still actively forming, shaped continuously by mineral-rich water dripping from above.
A paved walkway with lighting runs the length of the cave, and a few low-ceiling sections require ducking. Most visitors walk through in 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how many photo stops you make.
Carved over millions of years by rainwater, the cave interior has stalactites that resemble stone curtains or lotus flowers, and some standing formations that produce a faint echoing sound when gently tapped.
To protect the small population of bats, birds, and insects still living inside, lighting is kept intentionally minimal. Coming out the far end of the 300-meter tunnel drops you straight into the lush Kim Giao forest, a striking contrast after the dim cave.

Wear shoes with real grip, the paths inside can be slippery, and bring a light layer, since the interior runs 3-5 degrees C cooler than outside. The site is open year-round, but April to October gives the driest trails and easiest access.

Start at Hang Quan Y around 8:00 AM for an hour exploring the wartime hospital, then move to Trung Trang Cave by mid-morning for the stalactite walk.
