Cat Ba Island Travel Guide 2026

We have been running boats out of Cat Ba since 2017, and in that time we have seen the island at both extremes. We have watched the 7am ferry queue stretch back a kilometre on a public holiday, and we have had the whole of Lan Ha Bay to ourselves on a grey Tuesday in November.

This Cat Ba Island travel guide is written from that side of the water rather than from a desk in Hanoi.

Quick summary: Cat Ba Island sits 3.5 to 4.5 hours from Hanoi by road and ferry, and it is the base for Lan Ha Bay, the quieter southern half of the same UNESCO seascape as Ha Long. Cat Ba is the largest island in an archipelago that UNESCO folded into the Ha Long Bay World Heritage property in 2023. Dense forest covers the interior while limestone karst fills the water on the southern side, which means you can be trekking at nine in the morning and swimming by two in the afternoon.

Where is Cat Ba, and why does it feel different?

Cat Ba sits on the southeastern edge of Ha Long Bay, and it belongs administratively to Hai Phong rather than Quang Ninh. That small bureaucratic detail turns out to explain most of what makes the island feel different from its famous neighbour.

The large cruise fleets launch from Tuan Chau and follow a fixed circuit through the main bay. Cat Ba shelters Lan Ha Bay on its southern flank, well off that circuit, which leaves the same limestone scenery carrying a fraction of the boat traffic.

The difference shows up on the water rather than in the brochure. On a Ha Long day cruise you often queue to enter a cave. On a Lan Ha day boat you can paddle into a lagoon and hear nothing except your own oar hitting the surface.

The 2023 UNESCO change that most guides have missed

In September 2023 UNESCO approved decision 45 COM 8B.3, which extended the existing Ha Long Bay site to take in the Cat Ba Archipelago. The property was renamed Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba Archipelago, and the listing recognises the whole area under criteria vii and viii.

In practical terms, Cat Ba now sits inside the same World Heritage listing as Ha Long Bay, under identical protection and identical criteria, while receiving a small share of the visitors. It is worth knowing this the next time someone describes Cat Ba as the non-UNESCO option.

How do you actually get to Cat Ba?

Most travellers arrive from Hanoi on a combined bus and ferry ticket, which takes 3.5 to 4.5 hours door to door and includes hotel pickup. For a first visit that is almost always the right choice, because it removes every transfer decision from your morning.

Two details trip people up more than any others.

Speedboats no longer run into Cat Ba Town's central pier. Boats now land on the northern fringe of the island, and a connecting shuttle carries you along the trans-island highway into town. Booking a single-ticket package means that transfer is arranged for you rather than negotiated on the dock with a bag over your shoulder.

The Tuan Chau ferry only sails with at least 30 passengers on board. On a quiet winter afternoon it can cancel outright, so leave a buffer if you are connecting to a flight the same day.

The 2026 car rule that catches self-drivers out

Hai Phong's Department of Construction has suspended cars and trucks on the outbound ferry crossing between 09:00 and 13:00, and the restriction applies at weekends through to 30 September 2026.

We watch this play out most Saturday mornings. A family drives down from Hanoi, reaches the terminal at half past ten, and loses four hours waiting on the mainland side with the engine off.

The fix costs nothing. Cross before nine or after one, or leave the car behind and take the cable car over instead. Foot passengers and motorbikes are unaffected by the restriction.

When should you come?

September to November is the honest answer, with dry mornings, flat water and the domestic holiday crowd already gone home. March and April run a close second for anyone who prefers mild air to warm sea.

Here is how the year reads to people who work through all of it.

• May to August brings the warmest water, the best visibility and the best swimming of the year. It also brings storm season and the Vietnamese holiday season together, so weekends turn loud and room rates climb sharply.
• September to November is the window we recommend most often. Mornings are cool and dry, the sea stays calm, the town empties out and hotel rates fall.
• December to February settles at roughly 14 to 21 degrees, with fog sitting low across the karsts. Swimming becomes unpleasant, but trekking and climbing are at their best and the bay takes on the colour of ink and smoke.
• March to April returns green hillsides and mild air before the heat arrives, which makes it a soft and forgiving window for a first visit.

When is storm season, and what happens if one arrives?

Storm season in the Gulf of Tonkin runs from June through September, rather than the September to November peak that most guides quote for Vietnam as a whole. Northern Vietnam sees one to two landfalling storms in an average year, and each one closes the ferry routes and stops boat trips for one to three days.

The distinction matters because bad information travels well. The national peak genuinely does fall in September and October, but those later storms mostly make landfall in central Vietnam, so copying the national figure onto a northern itinerary pushes the warning two months too late.

There is one point worth understanding about how closures work here. We do not make that call. The bay management board issues a stop order and it applies to every boat on the water that day, which means nobody is out sailing while we sit in port explaining ourselves.

When a closure does happen, you choose what comes next: a refund, a change of date, or an alternative route on land. That decision belongs to you rather than to us.

How many days do you need?

One full day gets you the bay itself. Two days add a night on the water and time in the forest, while three take you out to the far side of the archipelago where the day boats never reach.

The day tour is the trip most people remember afterwards. You pass floating fishing villages built on plastic barrels, with dogs asleep on the decking and laundry strung between the huts, before kayaking through the Dark and Bright Caves into a lagoon enclosed by cliffs on all four sides. Lunch is cooked on board while you are still swimming.

Two days buys you the part that nobody photographs, which is the evening. The day fleet turns for home around four in the afternoon, and what remains is the sound of the hull, someone's radio two boats over, and a sky that goes orange far faster than you expect.

Three days reaches Dau Be, a stretch that single-night cruises always turn back before. This is the section where our guides tend to stop narrating altogether and simply let people look at it.

Where should you sleep?

Cat Ba offers two genuinely different experiences depending on where you set your bag down, and the choice matters more here than on most islands.

Cat Ba town is walkable, cheerfully noisy and five minutes from every tour departure. Accommodation runs the full range, from hostels with rooftop bars at one end to a cliffside resort with infinity pools at the other, which makes it the sensible choice for a first visit.

Inland and Viet Hai sit at the opposite end of the scale, with homestays built from bamboo, thatch and timber, and roosters that start well before your alarm. The last bus back to town leaves early in the afternoon, though most people who choose this side have no intention of catching it.

What should you eat?

Seafood here travels from offshore nets to the wok on the same day, and that is the reason it tastes noticeably sweeter than what you find on the mainland. Three dishes are worth ordering before you leave.

• Geoduck clam, tu hai. Steamed with lemongrass and garlic, then finished with scallion oil poured over while it is still hot, so it reaches the table sizzling. The crunch is the whole point of the dish.
• Shrimp noodle soup, bun tom. This is the island's standard breakfast, built on a broth boiled from shrimp shells, topped with fried prawns and fish cake, with fresh herbs thrown in raw at the last moment.
• Mantis shrimp. Grilled over charcoal or glazed in tamarind, and best ordered late in the evening with cold beer on a plastic stool by the harbour.

After dark the central walking streets fill with vendors selling crispy squid cakes, grilled pork skewers and fruit smoothies. The promenade handles western breakfasts and decent coffee if you need a morning off from broth.

What is worth doing on Cat Ba?

Four experiences define the island for us, and between them they cover water, forest, rock and history.

Kayaking into the enclosed lagoons

Lan Ha Bay stays calmer than Ha Long and carries far fewer boats, which makes it one of the better places to paddle in Vietnam. You duck under a low limestone arch and the bay closes behind you completely.

Sound behaves strangely inside these lagoons, with cliffs rising on every side and no horizon to speak of. Macaques sometimes watch from the rocks above, and we ask guests not to feed them, because the whole troop changes behaviour within days once someone starts.

Trekking Cat Ba National Park

The climb to Ngu Lam peak mixes cut stone steps with exposed tree roots, and it is steeper underfoot than the photographs suggest. The reward at the top is an unbroken view across the karsts in every direction.

UNESCO recognised the archipelago as a World Biosphere Reserve on 2 December 2004, covering 26,241 hectares of land and sea. The park records 4,151 species, and it remains one of only two reserves in Vietnam holding forest and marine ecosystems inside a single boundary.

Park entry costs 160,000 dong for adults and 80,000 dong for children, with shorter routes priced lower. Children under six or under 1.2 metres enter the park free of charge.

Will you see a Cat Ba langur?

Most likely not, and we say so before people book rather than after. Cat Ba is the only place on earth where the species still survives, which makes the disappointment worth managing honestly.

The population fell to around 40 animals in 2003 after decades of hunting, and it has since climbed back to roughly 90 as of October 2024, with 15 births recorded in 2024 alone. The langur remains critically endangered on the IUCN Red List and sits on the list of the world's 25 most endangered primates.

They live in two groups on remote cliff faces, and most visitors never see one. A guide who knows the terrain can show you where they feed at first light, which is the only realistic window if a sighting matters to you.

Climbing, and the war underground

Butterfly Valley is the island's inland crag, tucked behind a farming village, with routes running from beginner slabs through to genuinely technical lines. Deep-water soloing is the other draw, which means climbing a sea cliff without harness or rope and dropping into deep water when your grip finally goes. Book it through operators who check tidal depth and submerged rock, and who keep a safety boat below you.

Hospital Cave offers a completely different kind of afternoon. It is a three-storey bomb-proof military hospital built inside a limestone hill during the war, with wards, an operating room and an underground cinema still intact. The air inside stays cold year-round and the acoustics are genuinely unsettling.

Cannon Fort occupies the hill above town, where French and Japanese gun emplacements still sit in position. Come for sunset and stay twenty minutes past it, because the light on the water afterwards is better than the sunset itself.

Three things that catch visitors out

Cash matters more than you expect. Resorts and tour offices take cards, but street food stalls, scooter rentals and rural homestays deal in dong only, so withdraw what you need while you are still in town.

Sightseeing fees are charged separately. The provincial authority sets a compulsory bay fee of 120,000 dong per adult for a day trip, rising to 400,000 dong if you spend a night on the water, and national park entry is billed separately again. Always ask whether a quoted tour price includes both, because a good many do not.

The roads demand attention. A scooter opens up the north of the island and is the best way to see it, but check the brakes before you ride off and keep the helmet on. Tour buses use the same narrow passes, particularly on the route toward Gia Luan.

One quieter point deserves mentioning. The rules on single-use plastic are enforced here rather than decorative, so take what you brought back with you and switch to reef-safe sunscreen before you swim.

Is Cat Ba the same as Ha Long Bay?

Not quite. Cat Ba and Lan Ha sit on the quieter southern side of the same karst seascape, under Hai Phong rather than Quang Ninh. Since the 2023 UNESCO decision both areas belong to a single World Heritage property, but the two provinces still charge their sightseeing fees separately, so budget for both if you plan to cross between them.

Do you need a visa specifically for Cat Ba?

No, nothing beyond your Vietnamese visa or exemption, because this counts as domestic travel once you are in the country. There is no immigration checkpoint on either the ferry or the cable car. Do check the current entry rules for your nationality before booking flights, since exemption lengths change from year to year.

Can you swim in Lan Ha Bay in winter?

You can, although most visitors decide against it. Sea temperature drops to around 20 degrees between December and February, which turns a swim stop into a brief dip rather than an afternoon. Winter suits trekking and climbing far better, and the bay is at its emptiest and calmest during those months.

How much should you budget per day?

A hostel bed, street food and a shared day boat sit at one end of the range, while a hotel room, restaurant meals and a private trip sit at the other. Whichever you plan, add the bay fee and park entry on top, because most quoted tour prices exclude them entirely.

Is there Wi-Fi on the overnight boats?

Near the harbour there usually is, but coverage out in the bay is patchy and it disappears altogether in the remote stretches that the three-day trips reach. Treat a night on the water as offline time, and download your maps and confirmations before you leave town.

What happens if a storm cancels the trip?

The bay management board issues a stop order and every boat stays in port, with closures usually lasting one to three days. You then choose what happens next, whether that is a refund, a new date, or an alternative route on land. We do not make that decision on your behalf.
