Every trip from Hanoi to Halong Bay ends the same way, in a vehicle on a road heading for a pier. The bay has no airport and no working railway. What changes between options is how much you pay for those three hours and how close to your boat you get dropped. This guide prices each route in Vietnamese dong, names the operators actually running it, and sorts out which of the two piers your booking uses.

How do you get from Hanoi to Halong Bay?

Halong Bay sits about 150 to 160km east of Hanoi, and most travellers reach it in 2.5 to 3.5 hours by road. There is no direct train running between the two cities. The most popular option is a shared minivan or limousine with Old Quarter hotel pickup, typically 200,000d to 300,000d per person.

Almost everything else is a variation on that. You can go cheaper on a public coach, faster in a private car, or slower and more scenic on a motorbike. The one thing you cannot do is skip the drive.

How far is Halong Bay from Hanoi and how long does it take?

Reliable sources put the distance at about 150 to 160km from central Hanoi, or roughly 180km from Noi Bai Airport. The expressway takes around 2.5 hours. The older National Highway 18 through Bac Ninh runs closer to 3.5 hours. Most buses, minivans and private cars use the expressway.

Sources disagree on the exact figure, and it is worth knowing by how much. Vexere, the largest Vietnamese ticketing platform, lists 150 to 160km and 2.5 to 3 hours. Local tourism sites quote 165km on National Highway 18 and about 170km via the expressway.

The gap comes from where each source starts counting in Hanoi and which junction the driver takes. Anything under 140km is simply out of date. Those numbers were written before the expressway opened and nobody went back to fix them.

Getting there by road

Nine trips out of ten from Hanoi to Halong Bay are road transfers, and the four options below cover almost all of them. They differ by pickup point, seat width and how many strangers you share the vehicle with. The driving time barely moves between them.

Public bus and minivan, the budget options

Public bus is the cheapest way to make the trip, departing from My Dinh, Giap Bat or Gia Lam bus stations. Several operators run the route. Kumho Viet Thanh charges 100,000d from My Dinh, Hung Duc charges 160,000d, and a Dai Phat sleeper berth runs 220,000d.

Expect a journey of 3 to 4 hours with a few rest stops along the way. Staff do not always speak English, so this option suits travellers comfortable navigating with limited communication. Coaches terminate at Bai Chay bus station, which is a taxi ride short of either pier.

Minivan service costs a bit more, 200,000d to 260,000d per person, but seats only 9 to 16 passengers. That makes it noticeably faster and more comfortable than a full-size bus. Most cruise operators bundle minivan transfers with their tours, picking up directly from Old Quarter hotels, which is handy if you are already staying in that area.

Luxury shuttle bus and limousine van

For travellers who want a bit more comfort without paying private-car prices, luxury shuttle buses and limousine vans run 200,000d to 300,000d per person and complete the journey in 2 to 3 hours. Phuc Xuyen sits at 260,000d to 300,000d, Ha Lan at 270,000d, Duy Khanh at 240,000d to 280,000d, KaLong at 200,000d to 220,000d and Van Anh at 200,000d.

These come in a few tiers. Standard shuttles have air conditioning and comfortable seating, luxury shuttles add wifi and power outlets, smaller minibuses give a quieter ride, and private shuttles let you set your own departure time. Pickup is typically available from Old Quarter hotels between 07:00 and 08:30.

One practical warning about luggage. Limousine boots are shallow and a 9-seat van fills fast, so a full-size suitcase per person is a problem on a sold-out run. Private car and self-drive rental

A private car with driver is the most flexible way to travel, picking you up at your exact location and driving straight to the bay without waiting for other passengers. Rates start from 1,300,000d for a 4-seat car one way, around $50. A 7-seat car starts at 1,500,000d and a 16-seat van at 2,500,000d.

Those figures usually exclude VAT and carry a surcharge at weekends and around Tet. Ask for the all-in number before you agree. The trip takes 2 to 2.5 hours, which makes this the better choice for families or small groups who value privacy and do not want to share a vehicle.

Self-drive rental cars are a separate option for travellers confident driving in Vietnam, priced from about 500,000d to 3,300,000d per day depending on the vehicle, not including fuel. The expressway makes the drive straightforward at around 2.5 to 3 hours, though unfamiliar roads can add time if you are not using GPS.

Riding a motorbike from Hanoi to Halong Bay

Renting a motorbike costs around 120,000d to 200,000d per day, with manual bikes at the lower end and automatics slightly more, plus about 150,000d in fuel for the round trip. The ride takes 3 to 4 hours along the same expressway used by cars and buses.

Always carry your ID, driving licence and passport, as rental shops require these. Wear a helmet at all times, because it is mandatory in Vietnam. If you are driving yourself, note that paid parking is available for personal cars and motorbikes at the cruise ports.

How do you get from Noi Bai Airport to Halong Bay?

Noi Bai sits about 180km from Halong Bay and the drive takes roughly three hours. Scheduled airport coaches run seven times a day from 06:30 and cost around 290,000d per person. Limousine seats run 400,000d to 450,000d, and a private airport car is 1,200,000d to 1,500,000d.

Airport coaches leave at 06:30, 08:30, 09:30, 11:30, 13:30, 15:30 and 18:30. You do not need to go into Hanoi first. If your flight lands after 19:00 the coaches have stopped, and a private car is the only sensible option.

The route from Noi Bai uses National Highway 18 rather than the expressway, so it feels slower even though the distance is similar. Sources put the distance anywhere from 170km to 190km depending on which junction the driver takes.

Landing in the morning and going straight to the bay is doable, but it puts you at the pier around midday, after most overnight cruises have already boarded. Most people who try it end up paying for a night in Bai Chay anyway.

Is there a train from Hanoi to Halong Bay?

No. The Yen Vien to Pha Lai to Ha Long to Cai Lan line has been unfinished and dormant for more than a decade, and the Ministry of Construction only reopened discussion of restarting it in late 2025. The nearest rail option is Hanoi to Hai Phong, then road, which runs 7 to 9 hours door to door.

You will still find ticketing sites advertising HL1 and HL2 services on this corridor. Those listings are not reliable and no scheduled passenger service is carrying tourists between the two cities. For most travellers this is not a practical way to reach the bay.

Getting there by air

Both aerial options that used to serve this route are effectively closed. One ended permanently in April 2026 and the other has not run to a normal schedule since 2023. This section exists mostly so you can recognise out-of-date advice when you see it, because plenty of large travel sites are still selling both.

Travelling by seaplane

Hai Au Aviation, Vietnam's only seaplane operator, used to run a scenic transfer route from Noi Bai Airport to Tuan Chau Marina. It was a 45-minute flight plus 15 minutes of sightseeing, priced at roughly $340 to $477 per person one way, with a 7kg luggage allowance and three flight slots a day.

The seaplane is no longer available as of April 2026. Hai Au closed the route permanently on 1 April 2026, after about a decade in operation, according to multiple Vietnamese news outlets and travel agencies. There is nothing left to book.

If you have read somewhere else that you can still fly a seaplane from Hanoi to Halong Bay, that page is out of date, whatever its publication year says. Several large English-language guides continue to quote fares above $400 for a route that no longer exists. The prices in the paragraph above are history, not a price list.

Travelling by helicopter

Helicopter sightseeing over the bay is not something to plan a trip around in 2026. Vietnam grounded scenic helicopter flights nationwide after the Bell 505 crash on 5 April 2023, and the programme has not returned to a normal schedule since. At least one major Vietnamese operator still describes it as on hiatus.

The route belonged to Northern Vietnam Helicopter Company, running from Gia Lam Heliport in Hanoi to the helipad at Tuan Chau. Older guides quote a fixed weekly timetable, a fixed fare and a specific aircraft type. None of that stands up against current sources, so this guide does not repeat those numbers.

If the idea appeals, contact the operator directly and ask whether the programme is selling before you commit to anything. Do not build an itinerary around a seat you have not confirmed by phone.

Which pier will you arrive at, Tuan Chau or Ha Long International?

Tuan Chau Marina handles most overnight cruises on Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay, and sits about 15 minutes west of the Bai Chay strip. Ha Long International, also called Hon Gai, is on the eastern side and serves Bai Tu Long departures and ocean liners. Check your confirmation email before you book a car.

Most travellers do not realise the bay has two separate cruise ports, and landing at the wrong one can mean an extra taxi ride you did not plan for. Tuan Chau is the larger of the two and handles most premium overnight cruises across both bays. Ha Long International Cruise Port is smaller and serves mainly cruises heading into Bai Tu Long Bay.

Before you book transport, check your cruise confirmation email to see exactly which port your boat departs from. What the bay sightseeing ticket costs

This is the cost most transport guides leave out, and it is the one that surprises people at the gangway. Every boat entering the bay carries a sightseeing fee, charged per person and per route.

Entry is free for children under 1.2m or under 7 years old, and reduced 20% for ages 7 to under 16, assessed by age rather than height. Most day tours and cruises already include this fee, but confirm it before you pay, because a few of the cheapest online listings do not.

What changed on the water in 2026

Since 2026 every passenger vessel on the bay must carry GPS, AIS and a VHF radio, and 332 boats were inspected in March 2026. Single-use plastic has been banned on the bay since September 2019, so bring a refillable bottle for the transfer.

One naming point worth knowing before you read your ticket. Since September 2023 the World Heritage site has officially been called Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago, after UNESCO decision 45 COM 8B.3 folded the Cat Ba islands into the listing.

What if you are heading to Lan Ha Bay instead?

Lan Ha Bay sits south of Halong Bay, off Cat Ba Island, and it is not the same transfer. From Hanoi you can either drive to Tuan Chau and take the public ferry to Gia Luan, or drive the whole way to Cat Ba town via the Hai Phong expressway and the Dinh Vu ferry.

One detail worth planning around is that the ferry needs roughly 30 passengers before it sails. Off-season morning departures do occasionally wait. Book at least a week ahead during peak season to secure your preferred departure time and vehicle type. Avoid buying tickets from unofficial touts in the Old Quarter. Stick to your hotel, an online platform or a verified travel agency.

Before you pay, confirm exactly what is included in the price, meaning tolls, fuel surcharges and pickup service. Always agree on the total fare upfront if you are negotiating a private car or motorbike rental.
