At a glance: Thien Canh Son Cave sits on Cong Do Island in Bai Tu Long Bay, about 25km east of Bai Chay port, on sightseeing route VHL4. The day fee is 200,000d, but only overnight cruises reach it. A small sand beach sits at the foot of the entrance staircase.
Most people who go looking for Thien Canh Son Cave find out too late that they cannot get there. It sits far enough east that no day boat from Tuan Chau will take you. That single fact shapes everything else about visiting it. What you get in exchange is a cave with a beach at the bottom of the steps. On most mornings, almost nobody else is inside.

Thien Canh Son Cave is a limestone grotto on Cong Do Island in Bai Tu Long Bay, about 25 kilometres east of Bai Chay port. Local boatmen know it as Hang Co, the grass cave. The entrance opens roughly 30 metres above the water, at the top of a stone staircase. Inside, three linked chambers hold stalactite formations that guides name after animals. It sits on sightseeing route VHL4, which is why only overnight cruises stop there.
Where is Thien Canh Son Cave?
Thien Canh Son sits on Cong Do Island in Bai Tu Long Bay, around 25 kilometres east of Bai Chay port. The island belongs to the eastern conservation zone, well beyond the stretch of water that day boats work. Reaching it means a sailing time of roughly three hours from Tuan Chau or Hon Gai.
That distance is the whole reason the cave stays quiet. The central bay concentrates almost all visitor traffic into a corridor between Tuan Chau, Bo Hon Island and Ti Top. Cong Do sits outside it.
Boats that come this far are usually on their way to or from Vung Vieng, the floating fishing village on the same route. The two stops are almost always sold together.
What makes it different from the caves in central Halong Bay?
Scale and solitude, in opposite directions. This cave is far smaller than Sung Sot Cave. On a normal morning you may share it with one other boat rather than fifteen. It also comes with a beach at the foot of the steps, which no cave on the central routes offers.
Here is how it sits against the three caves most visitors have already heard of.

The trade-off is honest and worth stating plainly. If you have one day and want the famous cave, go to Sung Sot. If you have two days and want a cave where you can hear the drips, come here.
What does it cost to visit Thien Canh Son Cave?
The cave sits on sightseeing route VHL4, priced at 200,000d per person for a day visit. Overnight cruises pay a separate combined rate that already covers sightseeing, so nothing is collected from you at the cave itself. Children under 1.2 metres or under 7 years old enter free.

For a full picture of what a trip out here costs once transfers and meals are counted, the Halong Bay trip cost breakdown does the arithmetic properly.
How do you get to Thien Canh Son Cave?
Only by overnight cruise. No day tour from Hanoi or Tuan Chau runs this far east, because the round trip alone would eat the entire day. Boats leave from Tuan Chau Marina or Hon Gai on itineraries of two days and one night or longer. The cave usually falls on the second morning.
Which itineraries include it
The cave appears on Bai Tu Long routes, not on the central Halong loops. If an itinerary lists Vung Vieng fishing village, Cap La or Hang Thay, it runs the same route. This stop is then very likely included.
Check the itinerary before booking rather than assuming. Two boats at the same price can sail completely different water.
Why there is no day trip
The sailing time is the obstacle, not the ticket. Three hours out and three hours back leaves no useful time on the island. That is why nobody sells it as a day product.
Beka Travel does not currently operate a Bai Tu Long itinerary. This guide is written to help you plan, not to sell you a boat. What Beka does run is the quieter southern water: day tours into Lan Ha Bay from $50, and overnight cruises on the same route from $170. If solitude is what drew you here, read the Halong Bay vs Lan Ha Bay comparison. Lan Ha delivers the same thing on a much shorter journey.
What is the climb like?
Expect a stone staircase of just over 100 steps rising about 30 metres from the boat landing. The steps are uneven and shaded, and most people take five to ten minutes at a steady pace. Handrails cover the steeper sections. It is manageable for most fitness levels but not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.
Sources disagree on the step count, and it is worth knowing why. Some operators quote around 100 steps, others quote closer to 400. The higher figure appears to count the full stepped path from the beach, through the cave and out again. It is not just the climb to the entrance. Either way, the ascent itself is short.
Wear shoes with grip. The stone stays damp in every season, and the descent is where people slip rather than the climb.
What is inside the cave?
Three linked chambers, lit but not floodlit, with stalactite formations that guides name after animals and objects. The floor is dry and level once you are through the entrance. Most groups spend twenty to thirty minutes inside, which is enough without rushing.
The lighting here is more restrained than at Thien Cung Cave, where coloured floodlights do most of the work. Some visitors prefer that and some find it dim. Bring a phone torch if you want detail in your photographs.
Can you swim at the beach below the cave?
Yes, and it is one of the reasons to come. A small crescent of soft sand sits directly below the staircase, sheltered by the island on three sides. Cruises usually allow swimming time before or after the cave visit, typically thirty to forty minutes. The water is calm even when the open bay is choppy.
Sea temperatures make the difference between a swim and a paddle. From May to October the water sits between 27 and 30°C, which is warm enough to stay in. By January it drops to around 21°C and most guests stop at ankle depth.
The beach is small, so timing matters more than season. Arrive when two boats are anchored and it feels busy. Arrive alone and it feels like a private island, which is what people remember.
There are no facilities of any kind. No shower, no toilet, no shade beyond what the cliff throws in the afternoon. Bring a towel from the boat and swim in what you are already wearing.
When is the best time to visit?
October and November are the strongest months, with dry air, calm water and sea temperatures still around 25 to 28°C. March to May is the second window. Avoid July to September. The area takes its heaviest rainfall then, and typhoon activity peaks, which causes most of the year's cruise cancellations.
Time of day matters more here than season. Cruises reach Cong Do in mid-morning on day two, which is also the coolest part of the sailing day.
Winter visits work, but the swim does not. Between December and February the water drops to around 21°C and the beach becomes a place to sit rather than swim.
FAQs
Is Thien Canh Son Cave in Halong Bay or Bai Tu Long Bay?
It is in Bai Tu Long Bay, on Cong Do Island, in the eastern conservation zone about 25 kilometres from Bai Chay port. The ticketing system still treats it as part of the Halong Bay sightseeing network. That is why it carries a VHL route number. In practice, cruises marketed as Bai Tu Long itineraries are the ones that stop there.
Can you visit Thien Canh Son Cave on a day trip from Hanoi?
No. The sailing distance makes a day trip impractical, and no operator sells one. Reaching it requires an overnight cruise of at least two days and one night, leaving from Tuan Chau Marina or Hon Gai. Travellers with only one day should look at the central bay caves instead, which are roughly three hours closer.
How much is the entrance fee for Thien Canh Son Cave?
The day rate for sightseeing route VHL4 is 200,000d per person. It also covers Hang Thay, Cap La and Vung Vieng fishing village. Overnight cruises pay a combined route 4 rate of 500,000d for one night or 650,000d for two. That figure is normally built into the cruise fare rather than collected separately.
Why is Thien Canh Son also called Hang Co?
Hang Co means grass cave in Vietnamese. Local boatmen have used it far longer than the formal name. Thien Canh Son translates roughly as heavenly scenery mountain, and it is the name that appears on official signage and ticketing. Both refer to the same cave on Cong Do Island. An itinerary listing either name is describing the same stop.
Is Thien Canh Son worth the detour?
That depends on what you value. It is a small cave by Halong standards and it will not impress anyone chasing scale. What it offers instead is quiet, a sand beach at the foot of the steps, and limestone without a queue behind you. Travellers who have already seen Sung Sot tend to rate it highly, and first-time visitors often do not.
