You spend the night in a private jungle bungalow in Viet Hai village, sleeping 2 to 4 people per room, so you wake up surrounded by the peace of Cat Ba National Park. The bungalow is a private room, not a dorm, and it sits about 10 kilometres from Cat Ba town with forest on every side.

If Monkey Island is closed by the local authorities, it is replaced with a trek to Navy Peak for panoramic views over Cat Ba and Lan Ha Bay. Departure and return times do not change with the season. Only walking routes are affected by weather, and you can take a refund, a new date, or the land alternative.

Solo travelers pay a single supplement of 25 USD. Children under 5 sharing with two adults are free, while additional under-5 children and older children are charged from 75 percent of the adult rate. One free child applies per couple, and the Lan Ha Bay entrance ticket is already inside the price.

You paddle after dinner, around 19:30, in water that lights up where the blade breaks the surface. The glow comes from plankton called Noctiluca scintillans, recorded in Cat Ba waters by the Research Institute for Marine Fisheries. It is a natural event, so nobody can promise it on a given night.

Conditions matter more than the calendar. The glow reads best on a dark night, so a new moon or no moon at all beats a full one, and calm water with no rain helps. Light pollution washes it out, which is why the paddle runs away from village lights and roughly between 19:00 and 22:00. Local operators on Cat Ba report that sightings cluster through the summer, around May to August, though that is an operating observation rather than a measured season.

Nobody can promise it. Plankton move with the current, the tide and the state of the water, and there are nights when the bay stays dark. It is a private room sleeping two to four people, not a dorm bed and not a hotel. Viet Hai sits about 10 kilometres from Cat Ba town, inside the national park, with forest on every side and no through road. You arrive by boat at 20:00 and leave by bicycle the next morning.

Expect a bungalow rather than a resort. Rooms sleep two to four, with electricity, a fan, hot water and a private bathroom. There is no lift, no minibar and no room service, and the wifi is what a village 10 kilometres from town can carry. Guests who book a 99 US dollar trip picturing a spa hotel come away disappointed, so we would rather set the level here than in a review.

What you get instead is the quiet. Viet Hai has no through road, so once the last boat leaves there is no engine noise, only insects, frogs and the stream running past the village. Breakfast is at 06:30 in our restaurant and by 07:30 you are on a bicycle. Most guests are surprised by how early they wake up without setting an alarm.

Day one is long. Hanoi pickup is at 07:00 and you reach the village at 20:00, with a night paddle in between. Day two is gentler: breakfast, a flat cycle around the village, then the boat. Children under 5 travel free sharing a bed with two adults.

Fifteen guests is the smallest cap in our Lan Ha Bay lineup, and with a group that size the guide sets the pace by the slowest person rather than the average. That matters most on day one, where the gap between the 07:00 pickup and the 20:00 arrival at the village is long even without a walk in it.

The Navy Peak hike is the only part of the trip that asks anything of your legs, and it is optional. Guests who want to skip it stay with the boat or the beach. The cycle around Viet Hai is flat village road, not trail. Children from 5 to under 9 pay 75 percent of the adult rate and children from 9 pay the adult rate, as set out under Children Policy above.
