The Full 3-Day Cat Ba Itinerary

Looking for a full 3 day Cat Ba itinerary before you book? Here is the shape of the trip: Day 1 covers pickup from Hanoi, boarding at Ben Beo Pier, lunch on board, kayaking through the peaceful lagoon, bioluminescent night kayaking, and arriving at your bungalow in Viet Hai village for the first night. Day 2 starts with cycling around the village, a stop at Monkey Island, then you check in to the cruise boat for kayaking, a secluded beach, and your second night on board. Day 3 wraps up with a final morning on the water before disembarking.

For the hour-by-hour breakdown with exact pickup and activity times, see the detailed itinerary further down this page.

Bungalow night vs cruise night

Night 1 — bungalow in Viet Hai village

  • Sleep in a jungle bungalow in Viet Hai village, inside Cat Ba National Park.
  • Arrive after the bioluminescent night kayaking; a quiet, rural village setting surrounded by forest.

Night 2 — onboard the cruise

  • Sleep in a cabin on board, anchored in Lan Ha Bay.
  • Evening on the sundeck, with dinner on board and drinks at the bar — the classic overnight-cruise atmosphere out on the water.

Doing it yourself vs booking this tour

You can visit Lan Ha Bay and Viet Hai village independently: take the ferry or bus from Hanoi to Cat Ba (see our Hanoi to Cat Ba transport guide for current routes and fares), rent a kayak by the hour or day once you arrive, and arrange a bungalow or homestay bed in Viet Hai village directly. It works, but you are coordinating several separate bookings, ferry schedules, and boat transfers into the village yourself, and kayak and homestay rates vary by operator and season.

Booking this tour bundles the boat, the overnight bungalow, meals, kayaking equipment and a guide into one price, with someone else handling the logistics and timing. If you enjoy planning your own route and do not mind the extra coordination, doing it yourself can work; if you would rather show up and have the itinerary handled, that is what the tour price covers.

5.0Excellent!

Unbelievable cruise experience in Lan Ha Bay with Charlie as our guide! He was incredibly friendly, organized, and packed with fascinating local knowledge. The cruise took us through some of the most unique landscapes on earth. We loved relaxing on the sundeck, meeting other guests, and taking in the panoramic views. The food was top-tier authentic Vietnamese cuisine—the fresh seafood was definitely a highlight. A solid 10/10 recommendation!

A truly memorable getaway far from the crowded areas of Ha Long Bay. Hannah was an exceptional guide—always positive and insightful about the bay’s cultural heritage and fishing communities. The rest of the crew was equally warm and attentive. The bioluminescent plankton night kayak is an absolute must-try! Cozy overnight stays made the whole trip perfect.

FAQS

One night is spent in a cabin on the cruise and one night at a homestay in Viet Hai village, inside Cat Ba National Park. An electric car takes you from Viet Hai harbour to the homestay. The homestay is a private room in a working village, not a hotel and not a dorm.

This tour splits the nights between the boat and a village homestay, and includes bioluminescent night kayaking. The Real Local Bay Cruise spends both nights in a cabin on board instead. Both run three days at 239 USD and cap at 25 guests, so the real choice is where night one is spent.

No. Guests clearly saw the plankton on 94 of the last 120 night departures, roughly 78 percent. Sightings are least likely around the 15th and 16th of the lunar month, when the moon is brightest, and on rainy nights. Our bioluminescent plankton guide explains the conditions.

Pickup from your hotel in Hanoi Old Quarter at 07:00 is included if you book the transfer with the tour. Otherwise a bus transfer from Hanoi, Ha Long or Ninh Binh can be added for 15 US dollars per passenger. Transfer packages are chosen in the booking widget.

Two breakfasts, three lunches and two dinners are served across the three days. Drinks, taxes and personal expenses are not included. Meals are cooked by the crew on board and by the homestay family in Viet Hai village, and vegetarian options are available on request.

Cancellation is free up to 3 days before departure. Cancelling 1 to 3 days before incurs a 50 percent charge, and cancelling within 1 day of departure is charged in full. This window is much shorter than on the 3D2N cruise, which stays free up to 15 days before departure.

Departure and return times never change with the season. The 07:00 Hanoi pickup and the 11:30 return to Cai Beo are the same in January and in July. Only the walking depends on the weather.

  • What changes: the walk on Monkey Island and any hill route around Viet Hai. Nothing else on the itinerary.
  • What still runs: the cruise legs, kayaking, the night paddle, the homestay night, cycling in Viet Hai and every meal.
  • What we swap in: Tien Duc cave and level routes around Viet Hai village, both inside Cat Ba National Park and both on flat ground.
  • Who calls it off: the bay management board, not the operator. No fixed wind grade is written into the rule.
  • How long: one to three days at a time. Storm season in the Gulf of Tonkin runs June through September, as the Lan Ha Bay travel guide sets out.
  • If your departure is cancelled: refund, change of date, or the land route above.

The itinerary passes Ba Trai Dao Beach and the Dau Be area, two of the quieter swimming stops in Lan Ha Bay where day-tripping boats rarely linger. Because this trip runs three days instead of one, guests get more time in the water at each stop, plus a swimming break near Viet Hai village on day two.

The homestay offers simple, comfortable rooms with private or shared bathroom facilities depending on availability, giving you a genuine taste of local island life rather than a hotel stay. It's rustic but clean, with fans or basic air conditioning and hot water.

Signal and wifi are limited at the homestay, similar to much of rural Cat Ba Island, so plan for a quiet night mostly offline. It's part of what makes this tour feel more remote than a standard boat cruise.

It's moderate — you'll do some walking between the homestay and boat, plus optional kayaking and swimming, but nothing technical. Anyone in reasonably good health can join comfortably.

Yes, tell us about any vegetarian, vegan or allergy needs when you book, and both the boat kitchen and homestay hosts will do their best to accommodate. Local, home-cooked meals are part of the experience, so flexibility is usually easy to arrange with notice.

This tour adds an extra day and reaches quieter, more remote beaches further from Cat Ba than a shorter trip has time for. If you only have two days, our 2 days 1 night adventure covers similar kayaking and homestay-style highlights in a shorter window.

You're booking directly with the local crew who runs this boat, not a resold listing bundled by someone else. Our team on Cat Ba Island handles your questions, seat availability and any last-minute changes personally, from the day you book to the day you sail, and your booking supports a local, family-run business based on the island.

A well-paced 3 day Cat Ba itinerary combines cruising through Lan Ha Bay, kayaking, a night in a village bungalow inside Cat Ba National Park, and a night on board a boat, rather than doing everything by day trip. This tour follows that structure: pickup from Hanoi and cruising on day one, Viet Hai village and Monkey Island on day two, and a final morning on the water before you head back.

A typical 3 days 2 nights itinerary includes cruising and kayaking in Lan Ha Bay, a stop at a swimming beach, one night in a village bungalow, and one night on board a cruise boat. This tour also adds bioluminescent night kayaking, cycling around Viet Hai village, and a stop at Monkey Island, so you get both a land-based and a water-based night rather than two nights on the same boat.
